The Chamber of Deputies' Education Committee will hold three sessions this Monday to hear from various experts as part of the ongoing debate over the “Protected Schools” bill. According to Committee Chair Sergio Bobadilla (UDI), the goal is to hold a general vote on the proposal this Wednesday.
The executive branch's initiative aims to implement measures to ensure safety, order, and respect within the educational community. The bill has been granted "qualified urgency" for immediate discussion and is currently undergoing its first constitutional review.
Voting and Session Schedule
Representative Bobadilla noted that the committee is working on a tight schedule. Following today's sessions, he expects the general vote to take place this Wednesday, at which point a deadline will be set for amendments proposed by lawmakers or the government.
“We are scheduled to meet again on Wednesday morning to hold the general vote and set the timeframe for amendments (...) so that we can move the bill forward by Thursday,” Bobadilla said.
For Monday's sessions, the committee has called upon a wide panel of specialists. Speakers include academics from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, such as Alberto Vergara Arteaga and Joaquín Palma Cruzat, alongside experts in conflict management and psychology.
The second session, scheduled for Monday afternoon, will feature participants such as the Mayor of Providencia, Jaime Bellito, as well as representatives from various research centers and schools across the country. The committee aims to incorporate legal, pedagogical, and school management perspectives before moving to the detailed discussion phase.
