Zanzibar police have withheld the passport of Joe McCann, the partner of a US influencer who died while on holiday in the archipelago last week.

McCann, 45, is currently being questioned by authorities as a witness. Local police previously stated that McCann is not a suspect in the death of 31-year-old Ashly Robinson, known online as Ashlee Jenae.

Robinson was found unconscious in her villa at the Zuri Zanzibar hotel. She was rushed to a hospital where doctors confirmed her death hours later.

Investigation ongoing

Zanzibar's North Unguja police chief, Benedict Mapujira, told the BBC that the couple had reportedly been involved in a misunderstanding. This dispute led hotel management to separate the pair into different rooms.

Police officials previously told the BBC that Robinson had attempted to take her own life. However, the official cause of death remains unconfirmed as authorities await a medical examination report.

Robinson's parents, Yolanda Endres and her husband, told CBS News that her death "doesn't make any sense." They noted that Robinson had just celebrated her birthday and became engaged during the Tanzanian trip.

"We are confused about how that could change so drastically," Endres said during an interview.

The parents stated they received a brief message from McCann 11 hours after the incident occurred. They were later notified of Robinson's death by the hotel management.

Zuri Zanzibar issued a statement expressing sadness over the "tragic incident." The hotel confirmed it is cooperating with both local authorities and the US embassy.

The US State Department confirmed the death of the American citizen and stated that the administration prioritizes the safety of Americans abroad.

Robinson's social media followers have been posting tributes to the influencer, who had shared videos of her "dream holiday" just days before her death.
