Forest fires in ValparaISo Region

The Valparaíso Region is facing a period of heightened instability following a series of violent incidents and the issuance of climate alerts that threaten the area's safety. In recent hours, fatalities were confirmed in the communes of Quilpué and Quillota, even as authorities activate preventive protocols in response to the growing threat of wildfires.

In Quilpué, a 32-year-old man died after being attacked with a knife at his home on Las Margaridades Street, in the Las Rosas neighborhood. According to the Homicide Brigade (BH) of the Investigative Police (PDI), the crime occurred during a family dispute.

Subprefect Rodrigo Gallardo, head of the Valpara::aro Homicide Brigade, detailed that the victim died from a penetrating chest wound. The alleged perpetrator, the victim's cousin, turned himself in at a police station to report the fight, at which point he was taken into custody by Carabineros.

Prosecutor Juan Sebastián de la Fuente stated that the Public Ministry has requested an extension of the detention review until Wednesday to gather more evidence before formal charges are filed. The PDI has collected blood evidence and recorded witness statements at the scene.

Conflicting reports of violence in Quillota and La Calera

Conflicting accounts have emerged regarding a second incident of violence in the area. BioBioChile reported a homicide at the “Makos Tío Celin” establishment in Quillota, where an individual was fatally beaten with an iron bar following an argument over an alleged drug debt.

According to that report, the victim arrived at the venue armed with a blunt object, but following the dispute, the assailant disarmed him and struck him twice in the head before fleeing.

Meanwhile, the PDI is investigating an attempted homicide in the commune of La Calera, specifically in a plaza within Villa Los Copihues. Detective Gallardo reported that the victim is a 26-year-old Chilean man with no prior criminal record, who sustained a gunshot wound to his left thigh.

The Valparaíso Prosecutor's Office has ordered the Homicide Brigade to investigate both regional cases. The investigation in La Calera is currently focused on identifying the attackers responsible for the shooting.

Wildfire risk alerts

Alongside the wave of violence, the environmental situation in the region has escalated. The National Forestry Corporation (Conaf) issued a Technical Wildfire Risk Report, classifying the regional risk level as moderate to high.

In response, the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (Senapred) has declared a preventive early warning for the entire Valparaíso Region. Additionally, a localized "Red Button" protocol has been activated for the communes of Casablanca, Valparaíso, and Quilpué.

The Chilean Meteorological Directorate (DMC) warned that wind gusts of up to 50 kilometers per hour are expected along the coast. According to the agency, these weather conditions could facilitate the rapid spread of wildfires across the area.
