Chilean bassist Ra Díaz managed to join the legendary nu metal band Korn following an unexpected Instagram direct message during the pandemic. In an interview with Bass Magazine, the musician recounted how his initial contact with the members of the American group was accidental and facilitated through social media.

It all began while Díaz was in lockdown at home, where he started recording music videos with other renowned artists. According to reports from BioBioChile, his sessions with musicians such as Anthrax's Charlie Benante and Testament's Alex Skolnick caught the attention of Korn drummer Ray Luzier, who began following him on the platform.

The connection deepened following an online collaboration with drummer Eric Improta, which also featured Korn guitarist Munky. Shortly after, the interaction moved beyond 'likes' to a direct communication that would change his career forever.

From a Direct Message to Full Integration

The turning point came when Díaz received a DM from Luzier with a brief instruction: “What’s your number? Someone is going to call you tomorrow, and this is my number,” the bassist recalled. The following day, he received a call from someone informing him that the band was looking for a new member, though they didn't initially clarify that the band was Korn.

The confusion was so great that the Chilean musician had to investigate the group's identity on his own. “I asked, ‘Where can I listen to their music? Where can I find it?’” Díaz recounted. Upon being directed to the 'Korn Official' YouTube channel, the musician realized the magnitude of the opportunity.

For Díaz, the news provided emotional relief amidst the global health crisis. “I went from almost being depressed to the greatest happiness. Obviously, I said, ‘Yes, I’m very interested, I’m going to try,’” said the bassist, who grew up listening to the band's debut album when he was 10 years old.

Joining Korn permanently meant leaving his position in the band Suicidal Tendencies. Although the initial plan was only to go on tour, Korn's needs required Díaz to make a permanent commitment. The musician expressed regret that the pandemic prevented him from saying goodbye to his former bandmates with one final concert.

After four years with the group, Díaz highlighted the positive impact this change has had on his personal life, noting that he met his wife and became a father during this period. “The band brought a lot of happiness to my personal life. [...] I owe a lot to this band and I am very proud to be a part of it,” he concluded.
