Two individuals were arrested Tuesday afternoon following a violent high-speed chase and a shooting directed at Carabineros (Chilean police) along the banks of the Maipo River in the San Bernardo district.
The incident began around 7:32 p.m. when officers spotted the suspects driving a vehicle that had been reported stolen. According to latercera.com, the criminals attempted to evade the police checkpoint by opening fire on the officers.
During the confrontation, one officer sustained minor injuries after falling to the ground while attempting to intercept one of the suspects. A preliminary report from the institution indicates that the situation required an immediate call for reinforcements.
Capture operation
To track down those responsible, a large-scale operation was launched, involving the Special Police Operations Group (GOPE), patrol units, and support from an institutional helicopter.
The operation concluded with the apprehension of the two suspects and the recovery of two vehicles involved in the incident. The 14th Precinct of San Bernardo took charge of the proceedings following the chase.
Authorities are now working to identify the detainees and determine their connection to other vehicle thefts in the southern part of the capital.
