Opposition mayors and leaders from left- and center-left parties met this Monday to analyze the government's "National Reconstruction" project. The meeting aimed to coordinate strategies to address the initiative's potential impact on the cost of living and the financial autonomy of local municipalities.
Senator Paulina Vodanovic, President of the Socialist Party (PS), led the session and highlighted the commitment to collaborative work among various political and local stakeholders. The legislator emphasized the need to protect community resources from the proposed measures.
"We must also recognize the presence of the independent mayors here today, who are truly standing up for the people," Vodanovic stated during the meeting.
Protecting the Public
The PS President stressed that coordination between lawmakers and local authorities is essential to representing the people's concerns in Congress. The bloc's goal is to ensure that these reforms do not hit Chilean citizens' pockets.
"The important thing is to ensure that none of these measures impact citizens—that they do not hurt the people of Chile," the senator maintained. According to the lawmaker, mayors serve as the primary source of information regarding the actual needs of their communities.
The meeting also sought to establish a united front to ensure that the implementation of the project does not compromise the management capacity of local governments.
Meanwhile, a scheduled meeting between the PS leadership and the Minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency, José García Ruminot, was canceled. The meeting was intended to discuss details regarding various pending legislative reforms.
Vodanovic clarified that the request for the meeting originated from the Socialist Party leadership rather than being called by the Executive branch. The senator explained that the party required clear information regarding the tax reform project to be discussed in the Chamber of Deputies.
"Our opposition deputies have no information at all," the party leader noted. The cancellation occurred due to the party leadership's prior commitments to activities involving economists.
