Narcotics officers from the Los Ángeles OS7 unit arrested a man after seizing 16 kilograms of marijuana during a roadside checkpoint in the Bío Bío Region. The operation targeted an interregional bus traveling toward the commune of Villarrica in the La Araucanía Region.

The operation took place on Route 5 South, where officers flagged a suspicious suitcase using a drug-sniffing dog. The search led to the discovery of 14 packages of the illegal substance hidden within the luggage.

Criminal analysis and targeted operations

Lieutenant Juan Contreras Ortíz, operational chief of the Los Ángeles OS7 unit, explained that the intervention was not random. The officer detailed that the operation was based on prior criminal analysis and the targeting of specific routes used for drug trafficking.

“The procedure took place on Route 5 South as part of the permanent strategic controls we carry out as the OS7 of Carabineros,” the unit's operational chief stated.

During the inspection, officers located the owner of the luggage and confirmed the presence of the drugs. “We were able to intercept and identify the owner of the luggage, confirming that 14 oval-shaped packages were inside,” Contreras Ortíz noted.

The suspect, a Chilean national with a criminal record, has been placed at the disposal of the Cabrero Guarantee Court. The Public Prosecutor's Office is leading the investigation to determine the full extent of this interregional drug trafficking network.
