A New Strategic Role
Rodrigo Álvarez Zenteno, a seasoned lawyer, professor, and former high-ranking government official, is poised to take a seat on the board of Oro Blanco, one of the investment vehicles within the complex corporate structure that ultimately controls the lithium and fertilizer giant SQM. The appointment is expected to be finalized during an extraordinary shareholders' meeting next week.
Álvarez, whose long career includes serving as Minister of Energy and Subsecretary of Finance during the first administration of Sebastián Piñera, as well as holding the presidency of the Chamber of Deputies, is being nominated by Norte Grande. Norte Grande currently acts as the parent company of Oro Blanco and is controlled directly by businessman Julio Ponce Lerou through Inversiones SQYA.
Corporate Reorganization
This appointment comes at a pivotal moment for the so-called "cascadas" (cascade) companies, which are currently undergoing a significant process of merger and restructuring. The entities involved—Oro Blanco, Norte Grande, Nitratos, Potasios, and Pampa Calichera, alongside the closed firm Global Mining—are consolidating into two surviving successor companies.
Following the completion of this reorganization, Oro Blanco will absorb its parent company, Norte Grande, through a reverse merger. Once the dust settles, Oro Blanco is slated to hold a 19.42% stake in SQM, while the newly structured Potasios de Chile will retain 6.36%. These two entities will serve as the primary vehicles for the group's interest in the non-metallic miner.
A Career of Public and Private Service
Álvarez, who turns 60 this July, brings an extensive background in both public policy and corporate governance. A specialist in commercial, tax, and competition law, he has served on the boards of major institutions, including Principal Financial Group, Gasco, Enap, and Banco Ripley. His legislative experience includes three terms as a deputy for the UDI party and a role as a member of the first constitutional convention.
While his name has frequently surfaced in political circles as a potential candidate for high-level government or state-enterprise positions—notably the presidency of the state-owned oil company Enap—his new role at Oro Blanco does not strictly disqualify him from public service. However, analysts suggest it may create incompatibilities with certain high-dedication roles currently under discussion.
Deep Ties to the Business Elite
Beyond his professional credentials, Álvarez maintains a notable personal connection to the group's leadership. He was among the guests at an exclusive celebration for Julio Ponce Lerou’s 80th birthday held in Curacaví last November. The event was a "who's who" of the Chilean business and political elite, including prominent figures such as Senator Javier Macaya and various high-profile entrepreneurs, underscoring the close-knit nature of the circles in which Álvarez operates as he prepares to take his seat on the board.
