A magnitude 3.4 earthquake struck northern Chile in the early hours of Tuesday, April 14. The tremor occurred at 5:13 a.m., according to the National Seismological Center (CSN) at the University of Chile.

The epicenter was located 67 kilometers southeast of Socaire. The quake occurred at a depth of 192 kilometers, which limited the intensity of the vibrations felt on the surface.

Seismic activity in the region is driven by the interaction between the Nazca and South American tectonic plates. This geological process results in constant movement within the Earth's crust, much of which goes unnoticed by the general population.

Earthquake Safety Protocols

Following the recurrence of these seismic events, the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (Senapred) has issued a reminder of essential safety measures to protect residents.

The agency recommended staying calm and seeking shelter in designated seismic safety zones. If it is not possible to get under a sturdy object, the instruction is to stay alongside safe structural elements.

Senapred emphasized the importance of turning off the electricity and closing water and gas valves after a significant tremor. For those out in public, the recommendation is to stay away from buildings, utility poles, and power lines.

In specific situations, such as driving through tunnels or over bridges, the agency suggests reducing speed and stopping the vehicle once clear of the structure. During large-scale events, people should remain in place, protect their heads, and follow the directions of security personnel.
