The Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) moved to expand its renewable energy footprint this week by signing two major power supply contracts for new solar projects in the state of Campeche. The initiative involves the Alegría Solar and Esperanza Solar facilities, which are situated on the Yucatán Peninsula.

Alegría Solar will feature 600 megawatts of generation capacity alongside 300 megawatts of storage. The smaller Esperanza Solar plant will provide 300 megawatts of generation and 150 megawatts of storage. These projects align with the formal planning directives established by the Secretariat of Energy (Sener).

Strengthening the National Grid

María Elena Villarreal Salazar, head of the CFE subsidiary CFE Calificados, stated that the contracts represent a milestone for the company. She noted that the move strengthens the National Electric System (SEN) by ensuring a more reliable supply of electricity.

"Over the years, CFE Calificados has consolidated its experience in the wholesale electricity market," the commission said in a statement. "Today, with the incorporation of renewable energy, it strengthens its value proposition and positions itself as a strategic ally for companies that seek to grow responsibly."

The commission confirmed that the move directly supports the administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum. The president has issued explicit instructions to state entities to prioritize the expansion of renewable energy generation across the country.

CFE Calificados serves as the primary energy supplier for large-scale industrial consumers. By integrating these solar projects into its portfolio, the company aims to help its industrial clients significantly reduce their carbon footprints.

The utility plans to leverage these assets to provide cleaner energy options for the manufacturing and industrial sectors. Company officials indicated that this shift is part of a broader strategy to maintain competitiveness while meeting national sustainability targets.
