A driver was wounded after being shot during a violent assault in the Providencia district on Monday night. The incident took as occurred around 10:00 p.m. on Eduardo Munita Quiroga Street, where the victim was intercepted by a group of armed criminals.

According to reports from latercera.com, the man was driving a station wagon when he was approached by two to three individuals. The attack took place in the middle of the street and escalated into a pursuit and a direct confrontation.

Captain Nicolás Painepi, the Carabineros' Oriente patrol officer, detailed that the victim sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Upon arriving at the scene, police personnel provided immediate medical assistance to the victim.

“He had a ballistic impact in the abdominal area, roughly at the level of the armpit, and it is considered serious,” Painepi told the media.

Following the shooting, the driver was stabilized by SAMU paramedics and rushed to Clínica Indisa. According to the police report, the patient is currently out of life-threatening danger.

Investigation into potential stalking

The investigation suggests that the criminals were carrying various types of weaponry. Captain Painepi noted that at least two of the assailants were armed with a pistol and an Uzi-type submachine gun.

The officer specified that the shot was fired at the moment the driver attempted to prevent the theft. “Once the victim was forced out of the vehicle, he continued to resist the theft of his car, and one of the subjects shot him directly in the body,” the Carabineros officer indicated.

Police are working under the hypothesis that the victim was being followed prior to the assault. The speed with which the suspects approached the driver after he came to a stop suggests a pre-planned operation, according to the institution.

The attackers used a small city car to carry out the maneuver. After successfully stealing the station wagon, the criminals fled in an unknown direction.

A nationwide search has been issued for the stolen vehicle. Carabineros are continuing their investigations to identify those responsible for the attack.
