Hollywood veteran Samuel L. Jackson stepped into a new role last week, donning traditional African attire to honor the late civil rights icon Jesse Jackson during the NAACP Image Awards. The actor, known for his prolific five-decade career, used the platform to reflect on the debt he owes to the activists who shaped the American civil rights movement.

Jesse Jackson, a longtime advocate for the marginalized and a former disciple of Martin Luther King Jr., died in February 2026 at age 84. While the cause of his death remains undisclosed according to The New York Times, his influence on figures like Samuel L. Jackson remains a focal point of his legacy.

A commitment to history

Standing before the audience, Samuel L. Jackson recounted how the elder activist’s work provided a roadmap for his own life. He highlighted Jesse Jackson’s decades-long struggle against racial segregation and his efforts to secure employment for disenfranchised communities across all sectors, including the entertainment industry.

"For more than half a century, he advocated for the poor, the marginalized, for those who needed work," Samuel L. Jackson said. "He found jobs for our community in every arena, including entertainment, and inspired a young man who carries his same last name."

Born in South Carolina in 1941, Jesse Jackson rose to prominence in the 1960s. He became a defining voice for those overlooked by the political establishment, consistently pushing for systemic change and economic equity. His mentorship and activism served as a foundation for generations of Black Americans who sought to dismantle institutional barriers.

Samuel L. Jackson concluded his tribute with a vow to preserve that legacy. He urged the audience to remain steadfast in the face of ongoing social challenges, emphasizing that the fight for civil rights is a collective responsibility.

"We will continue his mission," the actor declared. "We will carry the torch he lit and keep hope alive. And we will not be erased from the history of this country because we are somebody."
