Punta Arenas is positioning itself as a global scientific hub with the upcoming edition of TEDx Punta Arenas. Scheduled to take place on April 14 and 15 at Explorers House, the event aims to cement the Magallanes capital's role as a key player in the global scientific dialogue.

Organized by the Antártica21 Foundation and supported by Corfo's Viraliza program through the Regional Productive Development Committee, the initiative aims to go beyond simple science communication. Its goal is to establish a narrative where the region serves as a driver of solutions to global crises.

The summit will focus on the region's strategic role in science, innovation, and Antarctic knowledge. Through this new edition, the organizers hope to ensure that the southernmost tip of the world is not merely an observer of global phenomena, but a generator of technical and scientific solutions.

Science and technology to tackle global challenges

The program proposes a direct intersection between science, technology, and society to address urgent challenges such as climate change and applied innovation. The participation of international experts will facilitate a global exchange of knowledge regarding planetary issues.

Beatrix Schlarb-Ridley, leader of the British Antarctic Survey's Innovation Center, will discuss her work in translating science into concrete technological applications, focusing on the transition from basic research to technological development.

In the field of environmental monitoring, EUMETSAT researcher Bernd Sirek will present the use of satellite imagery for measuring greenhouse gases on a global scale. This technological component is essential for understanding current atmospheric dynamics from a space-based perspective.

Representing the oceanographic perspective, Canada's Philippe Tortell will compare Arctic and Antarctic ecosystems to highlight their critical differences. Additionally, Eliana Lima da Fonseca will analyze how access to scientific knowledge is an essential element in decision-making processes.

The full program for the event is now available on the organization's official website. The summit seeks to integrate applied innovation with the urgency of contemporary environmental issues.
