A construction worker on the Monterrey Metro Line 6 died this Monday following a workplace accident in the section near the Monterrey Airport in Apodaca, according to elfinanciero.com.mx.

The incident occurred while the man, approximately 45 years old, was using a crane to maneuver beams weighing over 20 tons. One of the structures slipped, trapping the operator and causing his instantaneous death at the scene.

The accident took place in the monorail zone running along Aeropuerto Boulevard, directly in front of Terminal A of the airport. The event caused significant traffic disruptions and delays for travelers passing through the area.

According to preliminary reports gathered by elfinancente.com.mx, an alleged failure in the lifting equipment used during the maneuvers may have caused the tragedy.

Work suspended at construction site

Following the report, emergency responders arrived at the scene and confirmed the worker's death. Civil Protection officials cordoned off the area to allow for initial investigations into the site's safety conditions.

The Metrorrey transit authority issued an official statement regarding the measures taken following the tragedy. “An emergency code was immediately activated, resulting in a total halt of all activities at the AL6 work site to preserve the scene and begin investigations,” the agency detailed.

The institution also confirmed that the victim was an employee of CYACSA, one of the contractors responsible for the Line 6 project.

This fatal accident follows a recent incident at the same construction site, where a heavy structure fell onto a vehicle on Miguel Alemán Avenue, injuring a couple. State authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact causes and assign responsibility for the project, which is currently in a testing phase despite having no completed stations.
