Chilean police (Carabineros) arrested two Bolivian nationals in the Colchane commune, Tarapacá Region, after catching them using a backhoe to fill in trenches belonging to the 'Plan Escudo Fronterizo' (Border Shield Plan). The operation was carried out by officers from Iquique's OS7 unit along the border area.

The suspects were attempting to create unauthorized vehicle crossings by removing natural obstacles. According to a report from the Tarapacá Region's Carabineros on X, the detainees were using the machinery to cover the trenches and clear a path between the two countries.

The police intervention was triggered by an alert regarding individuals filling in trenches and clearing obstacles in the area. Upon noticing the authorities, the suspects attempted to flee, but police managed to intercept them.

Background and Legal Status

One of the detainees, 43, has a criminal record for smuggling, while the second individual, 31, has no prior criminal history, according to Cooperativa. In addition to the machinery, authorities seized a mobile phone during the operation.

The stolen backhoe was being used by the Armed Forces for border control reinforcement works. This equipment is part of the 'Plan Escudo Fronterizo,' a government initiative aimed at addressing irregular migration through the construction of trenches and the deployment of military personnel.

Both men are currently in custody facing charges of vehicle smuggling. Authorities are investigating the exact circumstances surrounding the theft of the heavy machinery.
