The Familia de Nazareth Parish, located in the Lagunillas sector of Coronel, has been targeted by three separate burglaries in a period of just two weeks. The total value of the stolen items exceeds 6 million pesos.

The stolen goods include three bronze crosses, each valued at approximately one million pesos. Additionally, an evangelary—a liturgical book essential for Mass and special ceremonies—was taken from the premises, with an estimated value of over two million pesos.

Thieves also made off with an industrial vacuum cleaner and caused significant damage to the church facilities.

The parish office released a statement on social media to inform parishioners of the incidents, noting that the thefts have taken a heavy toll on the community's morale.

"These events represent not only a material loss but also a deep sorrow for everyone who is part of this parish community," the statement read.

Call for reports

Parish administration is urging the public to help identify the stolen items, specifically asking residents to keep an eye on local street markets, social media, and online marketplaces.

Officials requested that anyone who finds the bronze pieces or the liturgical book report it immediately to the proper authorities.

Although the local police (Carabineros) were alerted after the news spread through the Catholic community, no formal complaint has been filed with the police as of yet.

Meanwhile, the Archbishop of Concepción, Sergio Pérez de Arce, addressed the security situation facing local churches. The prelate noted that the safety of chapels and parishes often rests on the shoulders of the communities and their priests.

"They are doing what they can with the resources available to them," the Archbishop stated in an official communiqué.

Pérez de Arce added that religious communities operate much like any other neighborhood or community organization. He emphasized that these groups are seeking cooperation from law enforcement and local authorities to help protect their premises.
