Strengthening Ties with the Armed Forces

SANTIAGO — President José Antonio Kast convened a series of high-level meetings at the La Moneda Palace this Wednesday, marking a significant effort to align the government’s agenda with the operational realities of the Chilean Armed Forces. The sessions brought together the country’s top military leadership to discuss the current status and specific requirements of each branch.

The delegation of military officials included the Commander-in-Chief of the Army, General Pedro Varela, and the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy, Admiral Fernando Cabrera. These discussions, facilitated by the Ministry of Defense, are part of a broader initiative by the administration to deepen its understanding of the needs facing the military sector.

A Collaborative Approach to Defense

During the meetings, President Kast was joined by Minister of Defense Fernando Barros and various undersecretaries. The President emphasized that the dialogue was essential for identifying where the government can offer more robust support. "It has been very interesting; I believe we still have much to contribute as a government institution to the different branches of the Armed Forces," Kast stated following the conclusion of the talks.

Beyond immediate operational needs, the meetings served as a preparatory stage for upcoming national commemorations. The President noted that the government is coordinating with the military branches ahead of the 'Month of the Sea' and the 'Month of the Army’s Glories,' two significant periods in the Chilean calendar that celebrate the country's maritime and land-based historical achievements.

Continuing the Dialogue

The outreach effort is set to continue this Thursday, with President Kast scheduled to meet with the leadership of the Chilean Air Force (FACH), led by General Hugo Rodríguez. This meeting will complete the initial round of consultations with the three primary branches of the military.

By engaging directly with the high command, the administration aims to ensure that the Armed Forces are well-positioned to fulfill their constitutional mandates. President Kast reiterated that these sessions were not merely ceremonial, but were focused on obtaining a clear picture of the requirements necessary for the institutions to operate effectively in the coming year. As the government prepares for the anniversary of the Air Force and other key milestones, the administration appears committed to maintaining an open channel of communication with the defense sector to address both routine and strategic concerns.
