Lawmakers from the National Action Party (PAN) have categorically rejected accusations made by Morena leader Ariadna Montiel, who labeled Chihuahua Governor Maru Campos a "traitor to the nation" for allegedly allowing CIA agents to operate on Mexican soil, according to El Universal.
Opposition legislators argued that the current administration's strategy is designed to divert attention away from investigations linking Morena officials to drug trafficking. Senator Marko Cortés described the ruling party's stance as "monumental hypocrisy."
“I could say that Morena is a bright light in public but dark behind closed doors. They intend to prosecute Governor Maru Campos for fighting crime, while protecting their own governors and officials who have been implicated in drug cartel links,” Cortés stated, as reported by El Universal.
Allegations of Narco-Governance
PAN's Senate coordinator, Ricardo Anaya, claimed that the 'Fourth Transformation' government is attempting to "set fire to the governor with green wood" to cover up the actions of authorities linked to organized crime.
“The tragedy is that a narco-party is governing Mexico. Look at the contradiction of what we are experiencing. On one hand, they want to prosecute... a governor because in her state, there are no deals with organized crime, because she dared to dismantle a narco-lab,” Anay declared.
Meanwhile, PAN's deputy coordinator in the Chamber of Deputies, Héctor Saúl Téllez, noted that Montiel's accusations are an attempt to shift focus away from Sinaloa Governor Rubén Rocha Moya. Téllez asserted that the true traitors are those who have surrendered territories to drug cartels.
From the Morena caucus, Senator Saúl Monreal called on the Chihuahua governor to step down temporarily to face investigations by the Attorney General's Office. Monreal argued that the presence of foreign agents without prior notice constitutes a violation of national sovereignty.
“He who has nothing to hide has nothing to fear, and she should have taken a leave of absence. [...] This is a very serious violation, as it breaches Article 40 of the Constitution, the National Public Security Law, and, above all, national sovereignty,” the ruling party legislator concluded.
