The Concepción Criminal Court has sentenced a man, identified by the initials E.L.P.M., to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of the intimate femicide of his former partner in August 2023.
The unanimous verdict also includes a permanent ban, preventing the convict from holding public office or exercising political rights for the rest of his life.
The court also ordered the collection of biological samples from the convict for the national DNA database and the seizure of the knife used in the crime.
The attack in the Pedro del Río neighborhood
The incident took place on the afternoon of August 11, 2023, on Almirante Latorre Street, in the Pedro del Río neighborhood of Concepción.
According to the court ruling, the defendant intercepted the victim around 3:05 p.m. and repeatedly attacked her with a knife.
The assault caused chest trauma that ultimately claimed the woman's life.
In determining the severity of the sentence, the judges highlighted the devastating impact the crime had on the victim's family.
The woman had four minor children, three of whom lived in Colombia with their grandmother, who suffers from Alzheimer's.
The court noted that the defendant was well aware of this situation and the victim's role as the primary breadwinner for her family.
"The extent of the harm caused by E.L.P.M. is evident not only in the taking of a young woman's life [...] but in depriving minors of their provider mother," the ruling stated.
The judges concluded that the magnitude of the damage justifies the maximum sentence, given the vulnerability of the children who relied on the deceased woman for support.
