A High-Tech Underground Operation

Over the weekend, personnel from the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), in coordination with the Navy, the Baja California State Attorney General’s Office, and the National Guard, secured a cross-border tunnel in the Nueva Tijuana neighborhood. The structure, which authorities believe served as a logistics hub for criminal organizations, featured advanced lighting, ventilation, and an electronic sliding mechanism designed to transport people and goods between Mexico and the United States.

The tunnel, estimated to have been in operation for several months, reaches a depth of 6.3 meters. Official reports on its length vary: while the FGR stated it spans approximately 265 meters,El Financieroreported a length of 250 meters. At the site, authorities seized four firearm cartridges, over 20 doses of methamphetamine, a bag of cannabis, bank cards, various forms of identification, cell phones, and a video surveillance system.

The operation was the result of intelligence gathered by the Criminal Investigation Agency (AIC) and a search warrant issued by the Federal Public Ministry. The FGR stated that this action deals a direct blow to the trafficking routes and logistical networks used for smuggling drugs, weapons, and explosives. The property and the evidence have been placed under the custody of the National Guard and are at the disposal of the Federal Public Ministry as investigations continue into violations of the Federal Law on Firearms and Explosives and the General Health Law.

The Nueva Tijuana neighborhood has been identified as a recurring hotspot for these illicit activities. In June 2025, U.S. authorities located the exit of another tunnel in San Diego, which led to a Mexican intervention on Gustavo Campa Street in the same neighborhood, where ventilation systems, electrical wiring, and transport tracks were also discovered.

Major Methamphetamine Seizure in Durango

In a parallel operation, the FGR dealt a significant blow to the flow of illicit substances in the state of Durango. Following an anonymous tip, AIC agents caught a man identified as Manuel “N” in the act while he was driving a refrigerated tractor-trailer near the León Guzmán highway in the municipality of Gómez Palacio.

During an inspection of the vehicle, which was traveling from the state of Nayarit with a final destination of Tijuana, officers discovered 916 kilograms of methamphetamine. The drugs were hidden in a compartment beneath a shipment of jicama, distributed across 369 boxes and plastic containers. The suspect and the cargo have been turned over to the Specialized Regional Control Prosecutor’s Office (FECOR) to determine his legal status regarding the probable commission of drug-related offenses.
