The Parliamentary Audit Committee has launched a comprehensive review of support staff allocations for all members of Chile's Parliament. Part of the 2026-2027 Annual Audit Plan, the process aims to oversee expenses incurred by 155 deputies and 50 senators between March and May of this year.
According to reports from latercera.com, the measure was communicated to lawmakers via a confidential memorandum. Unlike previous audits, which relied on random sampling, this review will cover all parliamentarians and committees that have submitted expenses under this category.
Priscila Jara, the Committee's coordinator and an attorney, noted that the audit will be led by Carlos Tapia Sagredo, who will serve as the official liaison for the review process.
Each legislator has five business days to designate a point of contact to facilitate the delivery of information. The Committee warned that if this requirement is not met, requests for documentation will be sent directly to the parliamentarians, and the Committee will rely on information available through Congressional administration.
Context of Judicial Investigations
While Congress stated that this review is part of the body's regular planning, the process coincides with ongoing judicial investigations. Reports indicate that the Valparaíso Regional Prosecutor's Office is investigating allegations of misconduct and fraud against Senator Camila Flores (RN).
The investigation, conducted by the Regional Anti-Corruption Unit with support from the Carabineros' OS9 division, was launched following an anonymous tip received in October 2025. The case remains under judicial secrecy.
Responding to the allegations, Senator Flores stated that she will cooperate with the authorities and has nothing to hide. “I have nothing to hide (...) I will cooperate fully with the justice system, providing all requested information,” the senator maintained, adding that she would face the situation with the confidence of someone acting transparently.
Once the inspection of support staff expenses is complete, the Parliamentary Audit Committee will issue a report detailing the findings of the process.
