The National Seismological Center at the University of Chile reported two distinct seismic events during the early hours of Thursday, April 9. Both tremors occurred in the northern regions of the country.

The first event struck at 2:13 a.m. with a magnitude of 4.4. The epicenter was located 25 kilometers northeast of Mina La Escondida at a depth of 108 kilometers.

A second, slightly stronger tremor measuring 4.5 magnitude occurred at 3:41 a.m. This movement was centered 70 kilometers southwest of Punta de Choros at a depth of 23 kilometers.

Chile remains one of the most seismically active nations in the world. Its location along the boundary of the Nazca and South American tectonic plates frequently results in crustal vibrations.

Safety protocols for seismic activity

Following the recent activity, the National Service for Disaster Prevention and Response (Senapred) reiterated standard safety guidelines for the public. Officials emphasize that remaining informed and prepared is essential for personal safety.

Senapred advises citizens to stay calm and seek immediate cover under a sturdy object during an earthquake. If no shelter is available, residents should remain next to heavy furniture to minimize injury risks.

For those outdoors, the agency recommends moving away from buildings, utility poles, and overhead power lines. Drivers currently on highways, bridges, or inside tunnels should reduce their speed and pull over only after exiting the structure.

In the event of a tremor during a large-scale public gathering, individuals should remain in place. Senapred instructions state that people should protect their head and neck with their arms and follow all directions provided by venue security personnel.

Finally, the agency reminds the public to proactively shut off gas, water, and electrical mains if structural damage is suspected following a significant event.
