The Chilean government announced a new initiative this week to freeze public transport fares throughout 2026. The program, titled 'Chile Sale Adelante,' aims to absorb rising operational costs to ensure commuters in both Santiago and regional areas see no change in their travel expenses.

Transport and Telecommunications Minister Louis de Grange said the government will provide direct financial compensation to transport operators. He stated these actions protect passengers from inflation while maintaining service continuity.

“We are implementing a special program to compensate for the rise in costs and ensure the continuity of services,” de Grange said. The policy applies to adult, senior, and student fares.

Subsidies and coverage

The plan covers a wide range of transit services. This includes urban and rural buses, EFE urban trains, taxis, collective taxis, and school transport services.

Beyond urban areas, the government is extending support to isolated regions. The initiative covers over 1,700 active contracts to ensure that ferries and routes in difficult-to-access areas do not see price increases.

Operators facing the highest cost pressures will receive specific relief. The Ministry will provide fuel incentives of up to $100,000 monthly for a six-month period to help stabilize their finances.

Specific rail services included in the fare freeze are the Biotren, Merval, Temuco-Victoria, and the Llanquihue-Puerto Montt lines. These services serve as vital links for regional connectivity.

Operators and interested parties can access full details and application requirements through the Ministry’s official portal. The platform allows for online submissions to ensure transparency as the program rolls out throughout the year.
