The Associated Press (AP) continues to serve as a primary pillar of the global news landscape, distributing reports to thousands of media outlets from its headquarters in New York City. Founded in 1846, the organization functions as a not-for-profit cooperative, owned by its member newspapers and broadcasters.

Today, the agency maintains 235 news bureaus across 94 countries. Its reach extends beyond traditional print, with digital platforms attracting more than 128 million monthly visitors as of 2025, placing the network among the top 10 news websites in the United States.

A standard for journalism

The organization’s influence spans beyond daily reporting, as it sets editorial standards through its widely used AP Stylebook. It also plays a significant role in American culture, tracking NCAA sports via its polls and managing election results during U.S. voting cycles.

Journalistic excellence remains a core objective for the agency. Since the inception of the Pulitzer Prize in 1917, the AP has secured 59 awards, with 36 of those honors specifically recognizing the agency’s photography work.

Under the leadership of president and CEO Daisy Veerasingham, the AP continues to balance its cooperative roots with the demands of a modern digital market. While member news organizations contribute local reports as part of their cooperative agreement, the agency also serves international subscribers who pay fees to access its content without holding membership status.

Despite shifts in the media landscape, the agency continues to publish in English, Spanish, and Arabic. Its radio network provides twice-hourly newscasts and daily sports updates, ensuring the organization maintains a presence across audio, visual, and print mediums.
