Taiwan President William Lai Ching-te arrived in Eswatini on Saturday, successfully completing a diplomatic mission despite significant efforts by Beijing to block his travel.

Lai arrived in the kingdom, formerly known as Swaziland, following what he described in a Facebook post as “meticulments arrangements made by our diplomatic and national security teams.” Upon arrival, the Taiwanese leader was greeted with a “military-style welcoming ceremony.”

The trip was originally scheduled for late April but faced major logistical hurdles when Seychelles, Mauritius, and Madagascar canceled flight permits for the president's charter plane without notice. The Taiwanese presidential office stated these cancellations occurred following heavy pressure and economic coercion from Beijing.

Taiwan’s presidential office described the pattern of flight cancellations as “without precedent in the international community.” While the exact method of Lai's arrival in the kingdom remains unclear, the office attributed the disruptions to Beijing's influence.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson dismissed the visit as a “laughable stunt.” The spokesperson further alleged that Lai used a “foreign plane to ‘smuggle’ himself out of the island,” maintaining that Taiwan is a part of China.

Beijing has spent decades pressuring nations to sever formal diplomatic ties with Taipei. Currently, Taiwan maintains formal relations with only 12 diplomatic allies, including Belize, Guatemala, Haiti, and the Vatican.

Eswatini remains the only country on the African continent that continues to recognize Taiwan. This visit occurs as Taiwan operates as a self-governing democracy, even as China claims the island is part of its territory and insists countries halt engagements with the government.

In his Facebook post, Lai stated that his government will never give up on engaging with the world. The visit included meetings with King Mswati III and the signing of several trade agreements.
