The Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) has detected highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) in a black-necked swan within the Río Cruces and Chorocamayo Nature Sanctuary in the Los Ríos Region.

Authorities confirmed the finding occurred on April 9 in the Río Cruces wetland. The discovery prompted the immediate implementation of sanitary surveillance and monitoring protocols across the entire sector.

Chile's National Forest Corporation (Conaf) activated security protocols after receiving initial reports of birds displaying symptoms compatible with the disease. The agency is now conducting preventive follow-ups to track the situation.

Safety precautions for visitors

Because the sanctuary is a high-traffic area with geography that makes total closure difficult, Conaf has requested that visitors adopt personal safety measures while in the zone.

While the agency noted that the probability of transmission to humans remains low, infection can occur through direct or indirect contact with the secretions or excrement of affected birds.

Conaf officials emphasized the importance of maintaining distance and avoiding any contact with birds displaying unusual behavior, disorientation, or those found dead.

"Prevention is the primary tool to avoid the spread of the virus," Conaf stated. The agency called on local residents and tourists to avoid approaching or handling any wild birds, whether living or dead.

Authorities are asking the public to report any suspicious sightings immediately. Reports can be made via a special call center at +56938663611 on weekends and holidays, or through the SAG central telephone line at 223451100 during weekdays.

Digital reports can also be submitted to the SAG information office via email at oficina.informaciones@sag.gob.cl, or individuals can visit their nearest SAG office in person.
