Zimbabwean fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani has been banned from the Pakistan Super League (PSL) for two years after opting to join the Indian Premier League (IPL) side Kolkata Knight Riders.

The 29-year-old cricketer had previously agreed to play for the PSL franchise Islamabad United. However, he instead signed with the Kolkata-based team as a replacement for Mustafizur Rahman, who was released following directives from the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI).

Because the IPL and PSL schedules now overlap almost entirely, players cannot participate in both leagues simultaneously.

"Despite a clear offer and an unequivocal acceptance of essential terms, the player chose to disregard these obligations in favour of a conflicting arrangement," the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said in a statement on Tuesday.

Contractual violations

The PCB characterized the move as a breach of professional standards.

"The attempt to move away from such commitments without valid cause is a violation of contractual obligations and principles of good faith that govern global professional sports," the board stated.

Muzarabani is not the first player to face sanctions for prioritizing the Indian league. South African bowler Corbin Bosch received a one-year PSL ban last year after choosing the Mumbai Indians over Peshawar Zalmi.

The tension between the two leagues reflects broader geopolitical complexities. Pakistani cricketers have been absent from the IPL since 2008, following the Mumbai terror attacks which halted player selection from across the border.

While recent developments like the signing of Abrar Ahmed by Indian-owned Sunrisers Leeds in The Hundred have eased some fears regarding player availability, the divide between the IPL and PSL remains sharp.
