Sabadell, Spain — Jaume Guardeno remains in critical condition at Taulà Hospital in Sabadell, two weeks after a training accident involving a car.

The 23-year-old rider for Caja Rural-Seguros RGA sustained serious injuries during the collision on March 31.

The accident occurred after Guardeno’s bicycle struck a rock, which led to a collision with a vehicle. Reports indicate the rider suffered head injuries during the impact.

The Caja Rural-Seguros RGA team released a statement on Tuesday confirming the rider's ongoing struggle in the intensive care unit.

“Jaume continues his fight in the intensive care unit of Tauli Hospital in Sabadell, where he’s been since March 31, when he suffered an accident while training,” the team said.

Medical monitoring and recovery

The team described Guardeno's current medical status as stable, though they emphasized the severity of the situation.

“His condition remains critical, although stable within the seriousness of his condition,” the team added.

Medical professionals are keeping the cyclist under constant monitoring. The team also noted that Guardeno is scheduled for further medical procedures in the coming days to assist his recovery process.

Guardeno’s recent performance on the professional circuit included a 29th-place finish at the Volta a Catalunya. Last year, he placed 14th in the Spanish Vuelta.

The upcoming season holds high stakes for his team, as Caja Rural-Seguros RGA is scheduled to make its debut at the Tour de France this year. This appearance marks a significant milestone for the organization following Guardeno's strong showing in the Spanish Vuelta.

The accident follows a string of recent high-profile crashes in the professional cycling community.

Olympic champion Tom Pidcock recently withdrew from the Volta a Catalunya after a crash in a ravine. Additionally, Italian cyclist Debora Silvestri was hospitalized following a crash during the women’s Milan-San Remo one-day classic.

Professional cycling is currently experiencing a surge in popularity, driven by the prominence of riders such as Tadej Pogacar, Mathieu van der Poel, Wout van Aert, Remco Evenepoel, and Jonas Vingegaard. However, the sport continues to face physical risks for its competitors.
