Jannik Sinner defeated defending champion Carlos Alcaraz 7-6(5), 6-3 in Sunday’s Monte Carlo Masters final. The victory marks Sinner’s first Masters title on clay and returns the Italian to the top of the ATP rankings.
Sinner’s win adds to a historic season. He becomes the second player in the Open Era to win the ‘Sunshine Double’ and the Monte Carlo title in the same year, a feat previously accomplished only by Novak Djokovic in 2015. This trophy is Sinner’s eighth Masters title overall.
A battle of momentum
The match took place in challenging, blustery conditions that forced both players to adjust their tactics. While Alcaraz initially controlled the pace with aggressive baseline winners and precise drop shots, he struggled to convert break points throughout the first set.
Sinner held his nerve in the opening frame, forcing a tiebreak that he eventually secured after a double fault from Alcaraz. The Spaniard responded early in the second set, claiming a 3-1 lead, but Sinner mounted a late surge. The Italian won four consecutive games to close out the match.
“Today was a very high level from both of us,” Sinner said during his on-court interview. “Getting back to number one means a lot to me. At the same time, as I always say, the ranking is secondary. I’m very happy to win at least one big trophy on this surface.”
Alcaraz admitted that his inability to capitalize on key opportunities proved costly. The 20-year-old Spaniard struggled to maintain his rhythm during the critical final games of the second set.
“I would say that the important moments, the important points, I didn’t play well,” Alcaraz said. “I think I had so many opportunities in the match that I didn’t take.”
Despite the loss, Alcaraz praised his opponent’s current form. He noted the difficulty of the physical and mental toll required to sustain such a winning streak across different surfaces.
“It’s impressive what you are achieving right now,” Alcaraz told Sinner during the trophy ceremony. “It’s something incredible and I just experienced how difficult it is to make that happen. So congratulations for everything, for the work you are doing with your team.”
Sinner’s victory continues a dominant stretch for the Italian, who has now firmly established himself as the man to beat on the professional circuit. The two players embraced at the net following an unforced error from Alcaraz that confirmed the result.
