Chilean football icon Iván Zamorano has expressed deep sadness following the death of Mircea Lucescu, the legendary Romanian manager who coached him during his tenure at Inter Milan.

Lucescu passed away after suffering an acute myocardial infarction on Sunday, March 29. The veteran strategist had recently faced professional heartbreak after Romania failed to qualify for the upcoming World Cup following a playoff loss to Turkey.

Zamorano, known as 'Bam Bam,' shared his grief on social media, posting a photo from their time training together with the message, “Goodbye Mister Lucescu, thank you for everything.”

A master of motivation

Speaking to El Deportivo, the former Chilean national team captain described the late coach as an extraordinary individual and a master of player psychology.

“He was a pure motivator. A man who could handle practically every sensation in football,” Zamorano said. “He would pull you into a football philosophy that I loved because it was very offensive.”

Zamorano recalled the difficulty of playing under Lucescu in a squad filled with global superstars, including Ronaldo, Roberto Baggio, Javier Zanetti, and Andrea Pirlo.

Despite the high-pressure environment of Serie A, Zamorano credited Lucescu's ability to connect with his players. He noted that the manager always knew the right words to use to change the momentum of a situation.

“Above all, the closeness he had with the players was extraordinary,” Zamorano added.

The Chilean striker's most successful period in Italy occurred during the 1997-98 season under Lucescu's guidance. During that campaign, Zamorano appeared in 25 matches, scoring nine goals and providing five assists in Serie A.

“He was a great human being and a very good football coach. He will surely be missed very much,” Zamorano concluded.
