Dominic Frimpong, a 20-year-old midfielder for Berekum Chelsea, was killed Sunday during an armed robbery on the team’s bus. The attack occurred near Samreboi as the squad traveled home following a Ghana Premier League match against Samartex.

Berekum Chelsea officials released a statement Monday detailing the ambush. The club reported that masked gunmen blocked the road, forcing the vehicle to stop.

“Masked men wielding guns and assault rifles started shooting at our bus as the driver tried to reverse,” the club stated. “The players and staff fled into nearby bushes to take cover.”

Security concerns in Ghanaian football

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed Frimpong's death in a formal announcement, describing the incident as a devastating blow to the nation’s sports community. The organization praised the young athlete for his promising talent and dedication to the sport.

“The GFA has received with profound shock and deep sorrow the tragic news of the passing of Dominic Frimpong,” the association said. The GFA added that it plans to review and strengthen security arrangements for all clubs traveling to domestic competitions.

This incident marks the second time in recent years that a Ghana Premier League team has been targeted on that specific route. In 2023, the Legon Cities team bus was attacked after a match at Samartex, though that encounter resulted in no injuries.

The attack occurred on a stretch of road between Goaso and Bibiani, a region in the south of the country known for its isolated stretches. Authorities have not yet identified the suspects involved in the assault.
