A fan stormed the court and headbutted Regatas assistant coach Gastón Petrella during a high-stakes basketball derby in San Nicolás, Argentina, according to biobiochile.cl.

The incident occurred at the Fortunato Bonelli stadium following a match between Belgrano and Regatas. While players were shaking hands and the home crowd celebrated a 80-73 victory for Belgrano, a supporter entered the playing area and struck Petrella in the face.

The force of the blow knocked the coach to the ground. Images of the assault quickly went viral on social media, according to the report.

Petrella was transported to a local hospital, where he remained under observation, biobiochile.cl reported. Regatas officials have filed a formal police report regarding the attack.

Institutional responses

Regatas issued a statement expressing strong condemnation of the violence and offering support to their staff member.

“Gastón is a committed worker, recognized for his daily effort, his constant dedication and his permanent predisposition to serve the club and our entire community,” the club stated.

The club also vowed to cooperate with authorities to ensure such incidents do not happen again. “We strongly repudiate any act of violence that tarnishes sport and the values it represents,” the statement continued.

Belgrano San Nicolás also issued an apology, taking responsibility as the event organizer. The club noted that they had implemented several security measures, including private security, police presence, and a restriction on visiting fans.

“The Club Belgrano San Nicolás expresses its apologies to Assistant Coach Gastón Petrella, of Club Regatas San Nicolás, for the events that occurred during the event,” the club said.

Club officials confirmed they have identified the individual responsible for the attack. Belgrano stated they are working with the justice system and the Argentine Basketball Confederation to clarify the circumstances of the assault.
