Sustained increases in gasoline and diesel prices are reshaping transportation habits in Chile, positioning motorcycles as a budget-friendly alternative to cars. With 93-octane gasoline nearing $1,600 per liter, drivers are looking for ways to lessen the impact of fuel costs on their household budgets.

According to data from the National Association of Motorcycle Importers (ANIM), sales of these vehicles grew by 5.3% during 2025. This trend reflects a growing need to mitigate the operating costs associated with higher-consumption vehicles.

A cost analysis reveals that a car driver traveling 2,600 km per month with a fuel efficiency of 14.4 km/l spends $288,000 on fuel. In contrast, a motorcycle with a fuel efficiency of 40 km/l could cover the same distance for just $104,000.

This difference represents a net monthly saving of $184,000. Beyond the direct financial benefits, motorcycles can reduce commute times by up to 50% in high-traffic areas.

Efficiency and safety in the transition

José Ignacio Zenteno, 2W Commercial Sub-manager at Honda Motor Chile, states that motorcycles have become an attractive mobility solution due to their versatility and operational efficiency. The executive maintains that this mode of transport allows for optimized daily costs without sacrificing freedom of movement.

For those looking to make the switch, experts recommend starting with models up to 350cc to make learning riding techniques easier. Prioritizing ergonomics is essential, ensuring the rider can plant both feet firmly on the ground to guarantee stability.

Safety should be the central focus of the decision. It is suggested to look for models that incorporate driver-assist technology, such as ABS brakes, traction control, and LED lighting.

The current market offers options tailored to different user profiles. Models like the Honda CB125F or the Navi are designed for basic urban mobility, while options such as the CB300F Twister or the CL300 target riders who require greater performance and safety for mixed-use routes.
