The language learning app Speak has officially launched in Mexico, aiming to replace traditional study methods with an experience centered on real-world conversation. The platform's mission is to tackle a structural issue facing many students: the tendency to study for years without ever achieving oral fluency.
According to Xataka México, the app seeks to fill the gap left by textbook-based and highly structured classroom models. Unlike competitors such as Duolingo, Speak utilizes artificial intelligence to act as a personalized tutor available 24/7.
The tool enables oral practice from day one through an AI tutor that simulates dialogues and corrects pronunciation and grammar errors in real time. This system leverages voice recognition and semantic analysis to provide users with immediate feedback.
A model backed by tech giants
Founded in San Francisco in 2016 by Connor Zwick and Andrew Hsu, the startup developed its methodology by observing markets with high demand for English but low effectiveness in traditional learning methods, such as South Korea. The app's technological framework is built upon OpenAI models.
The platform's growth has been accelerated by the support of major figures in the tech industry. According to reports, Speak is backed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and PayPal and Palantir co-founder Peter Thiel.
Currently, the application has surpassed 15 million downloads and boasts over 10 million users across more than 40 countries. On app stores, the platform maintains an average rating of 4.8 stars.
