Apple updated its official support lists this April, designating three iconic hardware products as either obsolete or vintage. The changes effectively end official repair services for two popular devices while signaling the final phase of support for a legacy laptop.

Under Apple’s internal policy, a product is labeled "obsolete" once seven years have passed since its last official distribution. This designation terminates all hardware service at Apple Stores and authorized providers. Devices labeled "vintage"—those between five and seven years old—remain eligible for repairs only if the company still has spare parts in stock.

The end of the line for legacy hardware

The most prominent device moved to the obsolete category is the iPad mini 4. Originally released in 2015, the tablet was long praised for its portability. While it recently received security patches via iPadOS 15.8.7, Apple will no longer perform physical repairs on the unit.

The 32GB version of the Apple TV HD, also a 2015 release, joined the obsolete list this month. The decision has caused confusion among users, as the 64GB version of the same hardware continues to receive support. Apple has not offered a specific explanation for the discrepancy.

Finally, the 13-inch MacBook Air released in 2017 has been moved to the vintage category. This model represents the final iteration of the laptop design that lacked a Retina display. Owners can still seek repairs at official stores, but service is now entirely subject to the availability of remaining parts.

Technical experts suggest that owners of the 2017 MacBook Air should prioritize battery replacements or hardware maintenance immediately. Once a device shifts from vintage to obsolete, the window for accessing original manufacturer components closes permanently.

For users of the now-obsolete iPad mini 4 and 32GB Apple TV HD, the devices will continue to function as they did before the update. However, any future hardware failure will require reliance on third-party repair shops and non-official components, as Apple has officially withdrawn its support for these legacy machines.
