The departure of Prefect General Consuelo Peña from her position as Deputy Director of the PDI is raising serious questions about the management of Security Minister Trinidad Steinert. Journalist Rocío Montes noted that doubts surrounding the 'Steinert case' persist, despite the government's efforts to put the matter to rest.
Montes stated that the José Antonio Kast administration has failed to resolve the issue with both the opposition and the press. A panelist on the programTolerancia Cero, she argued that while the government seems to believe the matter is settled, clear explanations are still missing.
Uncertainty within police leadership
PDI Director Eduardo Cerna recently testified before the Chamber of Deputies' Security Committee, stating that he personally made the decision to remove Peña. However, Cerna failed to clarify Minister Steinert's role in the decision, despite reports directly linking the minister to the departure of the Intelligence chief.
The journalist questioned the veracity of the official version presented to Congress. Montes argued that the lack of clarity regarding the reasons for removing the head of Organized Crime and Migration Security raises suspicions about the administration's transparency.
The Kast government has centered its platform on security and the economy. While drastic economic measures, such as fuel price hikes, have been implemented, the security strategy appears focused on avoiding media scrutiny.
Montes criticized the tendency of officials to try to suppress controversial issues by aligning their narratives. She warned that such management undermines public trust and the strengthening of institutions during a critical time for the country.
