A Routine Call Turns Fatal
The Carabineros de Chile institution is in mourning following the death of Sergeant Second Javier Figueroa Manquemilla, who succumbed to injuries sustained in the line of duty. The 36-year-old officer, a member of the First Precinct of Puerto Varas, passed away early Thursday morning after spending a week in critical condition at the Puerto Montt Base Hospital.
The incident occurred on March 11, the same day as the national presidential transition. At approximately 6:00 a.m., the First Precinct received reports of a public disturbance involving a group of individuals consuming alcohol near the railway tracks in Puerto Varas. Upon arriving at the scene to address the noise complaint, Sergeant Figueroa was confronted by armed suspects. During the encounter, one of the individuals opened fire, striking the officer in the head.
Following the shooting, Figueroa’s patrol partner discovered him and initiated an emergency transport to the hospital. Despite the efforts of medical staff in the Intensive Care Unit, the sergeant remained in a state of brain death for seven days before his passing was confirmed.
Investigation Underway
The investigation into the shooting has been assigned to the Homicide Brigade (BH) of the Investigative Police (PDI), under the direction of the Organized Crime and Homicide Team (ECOH) of the Public Prosecutor's Office. As of this report, authorities are still working to apprehend the individual responsible for firing the shots.
A Legacy of Service
Sergeant Figueroa was a pillar of the Puerto Varas police community. Having joined the Carabineros at age 21, he completed his training at the School of Carabineros in Puerto Montt, where he was recognized for his academic excellence. Over the course of his 15-year career, Figueroa maintained a reputation for unwavering professionalism, consistently appearing on the institution’s “merit list” due to his high performance ratings.
Colleagues describe him as a highly respected and well-liked officer who was deeply committed to his role in the operational sector of Puerto Varas. Beyond his professional achievements, Figueroa was a family man. He resided in Purranque with his wife, who is also a member of the Carabineros, and is survived by their seven-year-old son.
The loss of Sergeant Figueroa has sent shockwaves through the region of Los Lagos, highlighting the persistent dangers faced by law enforcement officers while responding to routine calls. The Carabineros have expressed their profound grief, honoring a career defined by dedication and a commitment to public safety.
