A Fatal Confrontation
The community of Puerto Varas and the wider Los Lagos region are in mourning following the death of Sergeant Second Javier Figueroa Manquemilla. The officer, who had been fighting for his life for over a week, passed away early Thursday morning at the Dr. Eduardo Schütz Schroeder Regional Hospital in Puerto Montt.
According to reports from La Tercera, the incident occurred on March 11, when Sergeant Figueroa and his colleagues responded to reports of noise complaints near the railway tracks at the intersection of Pasaje Uno and Nicanor García. Upon arrival, the patrol was met with gunfire from unidentified individuals. Figueroa was struck in the head during the exchange, leaving him in critical condition and requiring mechanical ventilation.
Investigations and Lack of Arrests
Despite the intense search efforts conducted by local authorities, no suspects have been apprehended in connection with the shooting. The investigation remains ongoing as law enforcement agencies work to identify the perpetrators who opened fire on the officers during what began as a routine public order intervention.
The death of Sergeant Figueroa marks a somber moment for the Chilean security forces. While Carabineros de Chile initially maintained caution regarding official statements, the gravity of the situation has led to an outpouring of grief from across the country’s security apparatus.
National Condolences
The Director of the Investigations Police (PDI), Eduardo Cerna, was among the first to publicly acknowledge the loss, offering his deepest condolences to the family of the fallen officer and to the Carabineros institution. In a public statement, the PDI recognized Sergeant Figueroa for having lost his life while performing his duty, highlighting the inherent dangers faced by officers in the line of service.
"We extend our most sincere and heartfelt condolences to Carabineros de Chile and his family," the PDI stated. The loss of Sergeant Figueroa has reignited conversations regarding the safety of police officers during routine patrols and the increasing volatility of public order incidents in the region.
As of Thursday, authorities continue to process the scene and gather evidence, with the hope that the perpetrators will soon be brought to justice for this act of violence.
