Three people are in custody following a high-speed police pursuit across three Santiago communes on Wednesday, after vehicle occupants allegedly attempted to run over Carabineros officers.
The incident began in the Peñalolén commune when police personnel attempted to stop a vehicle for a routine inspection. The driver refused to comply with the order and fled the scene, triggering a chase through the southeastern sector of the Metropolitan Region.
According to preliminary reports from CNN Chile, the pursuit spanned several neighborhoods, moving from Peñalolén into La Florida. During the evasion, the occupants of the vehicle reportedly used the car to attempt to strike officers on the ground.
In response to the attempt to run over the officers, Carabineros personnel fired shots at the moving vehicle. The chase continued through the streets of the capital before police were able to corner the car in Macul.
Detainees and medical status
Officers intercepted the vehicle in Macul, finding all three occupants still inside. The three individuals have been detained by authorities.
The detainees are Venezuelan nationals, and investigators noted that one of the occupants is currently in the country with irregular migratory status.
One of the men sustained a gunshot wound to the thigh during the confrontation. Emergency services transported him to a local healthcare center for urgent medical attention.
Medical professionals at the facility confirmed that the individual is currently out of life-threatening danger.
Law enforcement officials are now conducting the necessary diligences to reconstruct the full timeline of the event. The investigation aims to determine the specific responsibilities of the driver and the passengers regarding the attempted assault on the police force.
