Prosecutors have concluded their investigation into the desecration of graves at the General Cemetery, filing a formal indictment that seeks a prison sentence of up to six years. The prosecution is seeking penalties for the tampering with human remains and the damage inflicted on monuments within the grounds.

The case gained widespread public attention nearly a year ago after video footage surfaced, sparking widespread outrage. The recordings showed graves being disturbed and a blatant lack of respect for the deceased in Santiago's historic cemetery.

Moving toward trial

Prosecutors detailed that the charges include crimes related to the tampering with human remains and the vandalism of funerary monuments. However, the investigation faced hurdles in fully identifying all those involved in the criminal acts.

The legal proceedings are now moving toward the oral trial stage. During this phase, the prosecution will present the evidence supporting the indictment to determine the defendant's criminal liability.

Some investigative steps remain outside the scope of this closed investigation. Prosecutors acknowledged that certain aspects of the case are still being clarified, which complicates the process of determining whether other individuals were involved in the crimes.
