A fatal traffic accident occurred this morning at kilometer 27 of Route 5 North, in the Lampa district, leaving one person dead and another injured. The small vehicle lost control and collided violently with the crash barriers on the southbound side of the highway.
Carabineros Sub-lieutenant Carlos Ayala reported that the passenger of the pickup truck died instantly at the scene due to the severity of the impact. The driver of the vehicle was injured and rushed to a nearby medical center for treatment.
Investigation underway into hit-and-run collision
Authorities are now working to clarify the exact sequence of events. The primary theory being investigated by Carabineros is that the pickup truck was struck by a larger truck, whose driver fled the scene following the rear-end collision.
Carabineros' Traffic Accident Investigation Section (SIAT) is currently conducting forensic analysis at the scene. Specialized personnel are working to gather evidence that will help identify the driver of the truck involved in the maneuver that preceded the crash.
Due to the ongoing police investigation, southbound traffic on Route 5 North is experiencing partial lane closures. Transport authorities have urged motorists to exercise extreme caution in the area, near the Carabineros station, and to yield to emergency crews still operating at the scene.
