The Mayor of Independencia, Agustín Iglesias, has warned that the current administration has failed to establish security as its top priority. In an interview on La Tercera's streaming program, the mayor criticized the lack of visibility regarding the nation's security authority.
As reported by latercera.com, Iglesias expressed concern over the balance of power within the cabinet. The mayor argued that the Ministry of Finance is overshadowing the Ministry of Security.
“I need to see more of the Security Minister and less of the Finance Minister,” Iglesias stated during the conversation with Juan Andrés Quezada and Rodrigo Álvarez.
The mayor pointed out that citizens elected President Kast on the promise to combat irregular migration and crime. He warned that if concrete results—such as the deportation of irregular migrants—are not achieved, public trust in the administration will suffer.
“If there are no results... patience will run out, and that will hit this government hard,” the mayor concluded.
Fentanyl discovery at local street market
Shifting topics, the Independencia official addressed a recent seizure of illicit substances in his municipality. The mayor confirmed that fentanyl patches were found being sold at one of the area's local street markets (ferias libres).
Iglesias detailed that out of the six street markets operating in Independencia, four have been identified as sites where illegal medications are being sold. He described the discovery of fentanyl as an unprecedented event that even caught the Police of Investigations (PDI) by surprise.
“Finding fentanyl at a street market is not common, which is why this seizure is so significant,” the mayor explained. He expressed hope that police investigations will trace the origin of these substances to ensure they are permanently removed from circulation.
