A man has died after being struck by a vehicle during an attempted "encerrona" robbery in the Maipú district of the Metropolitan Region. The incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. on Las Torres Avenue.
At the time of the incident, the victim was retrieving belongings from a car's trunk. During this moment, a group of criminals intercepted the vehicle in an attempt to carry out the robbery.
In an attempt to avoid the theft, the driver reversed the car, striking the man standing by the trunk. The maneuver also caused a collision with a motorcycle carrying the suspects, who fled the scene immediately following the impact.
Police investigation
The driver turned himself in to authorities to provide a statement regarding the incident. Lieutenant Colonel Cristián Becerra, of the Santiago Rinconada Prefecture, confirmed that specialized units are already working to reconstruct the events.
“Through the OS9 investigative units and the Traffic Accident Investigation Section, the Chilean National Police have already been able to establish the sequence of events,” the officer stated.
Becerra noted that investigations are ongoing to identify the remaining suspects involved in the crime. “We are working to locate the individuals involved in this criminal act,” he added.
OS9 personnel and representatives from the Public Prosecutor's Office are currently taking the necessary statements to determine legal liability regarding both the accident and the attempted robbery.
