Prosecutors in Chillán have formally charged a 49-year-old man with attempted parricide following an attack on his three-month-old grandson. The suspect was the infant's caregiver at the time of the incident, which took place in the Ñuble Region.
According to the investigation, the incident occurred last Friday, April 10. The man reportedly reacted violently to the baby's crying while the infant was in his stroller.
Prosecutor Nadia Espinoza detailed that the man's actions caused severe brain injuries to the minor, consistent with Shaken Baby Syndrome. According to the Public Ministry representative, the victim would have died had they not received timely medical attention.
Infant's health status
The baby, who is three months and 21 days old, had to be placed on a mechanical ventilator following the attack. Although the infant is currently out of life-threatening danger, medical authorities cannot yet rule out permanent neurological damage.
The investigation, involving the PDI's Homicide Brigade, will continue for a period of four months. During this time, detectives will work to uncover all the facts surrounding the assault.
Regarding the defendant's legal status, the Chillán Guarantee Court rejected the prosecution's request for pretrial detention. The accused will appear in court this Wednesday, when a precautionary measure for his judicial process will be determined.
