Voters in three Canadian ridings head to the polls today, potentially handing Prime Minister Mark Carney a majority government.

Success in the three byelections could stabilize Liberal control over Parliament. The party currently holds a minority government following last April's election.

Two of the contests involve former Liberal strongholds in Ontario. The University-Rosedale riding, previously held by Chrystia Freeland, and Scarborough Southwest, formerly represented by Bill Blair, are both up for grabs.

In University-Rosedale, physician Danielle Martin faces Conservative Don Hodgson and New Democrat Serena Purdy.

In Scarborough Southwest, former Ontario NDP deputy leader Doly Begum competes against Conservative Diana Filipova and NDP candidate Fatima Shaban.

Battle for Terrebonne

A third critical battleground sits in Terrebonne, Quebec. This seat became vacant after the Supreme Court invalidated the 2025 election results.

Liberal candidate Tatiana Auguste faces Bloc Québécois candidate Nathalie Sinclair-Desgagné and Conservative Adrienne Charles.

Due to a protest effort that placed 48 names on the ballot, Elections Canada is utilizing write-in ballots for the Terrebonne contest.

Winning all three seats would bring the Liberal count to 174 seats in the House of Commons.

Recent political maneuvers have bolstered Carney's position. The Liberal leader recently successfully courted five opposition MPs to cross the floor to the governing party.
