A Sustained Upward Trend

Consumers in Chile are bracing for further financial pressure as the price of kerosene, commonly used for heating, continues its steep ascent. According to the latest announcement from the National Petroleum Company (ENAP), the fuel will see an increase of $107.4 per liter starting this Thursday. This hike follows a nearly identical surge of $107.9 per liter recorded just last week, marking two consecutive weeks of significant price volatility.

This trend comes at a time of heightened uncertainty regarding global energy markets. The upward movement is largely attributed to the ongoing instability in the Middle East, which has placed significant pressure on international oil prices. As Chile is a net importer of fuel, these global fluctuations are quickly reflected in domestic prices at the pump and for home heating supplies.

Government Mechanisms Under Scrutiny

As the cost of living remains a primary concern for the Chilean public, there is growing scrutiny regarding the government's role in mitigating these shocks. Specifically, attention is focused on the Fuel Price Stabilization Mechanism (MEPCO) and the Oil Price Stabilization Fund (FEPP).

The FEPP is the primary tool designated to dampen the impact of rising kerosene costs, yet the scale of the recent increases has sparked a broader debate about the effectiveness of current stabilization policies. Policymakers are under increasing pressure to determine how to navigate the current market environment without placing an undue burden on the population, particularly as winter approaches and the demand for heating fuel typically rises.

What Comes Next for Fuel Prices

While the price of kerosene is adjusted on a weekly basis, the outlook for gasoline remains on a different schedule. ENAP is expected to announce the new reference prices for gasoline next Wednesday. Unlike kerosene, gasoline prices in Chile are subject to a three-week adjustment cycle, providing a slight buffer for consumers against the immediate volatility seen in other energy sectors.

Industry analysts and market observers will be watching closely to see if the government intervenes further to stabilize energy costs. For now, households are advised to anticipate higher heating expenses as the geopolitical climate continues to drive fuel prices upward.
