Police have arrested the owner of the property where the former Pinto sawmill once operated in the Los Los Lagos commune, after a fire broke out during a debris burn. The blaze, which occurred last Monday night, posed an imminent threat to several nearby homes.
The fire started on a plot of land located on the road leading from Los Lagos toward Panguipulli. According to reports from biobiochile.cl, the flames spread out of control due to wind conditions during the cleanup activity.
The fire affected an area of approximately 200 square meters. The emergency required the intervention of multiple fire departments, including volunteer crews from Los Lagos, Antilhue, and Valdivia.
Firefighter response and legal proceedings
Thanks to the rapid response of emergency teams, crews were able to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby houses. The incident caused alarm in the area due to how close the homes were to the source of the fire.
The Public Prosecutor's Office maintains that the debris burn did not have the required authorization. As a result, police proceeded with the arrest of the landowner.
The defendant has already appeared before the Los Lagos Guarantee Court. During the hearing, a detention control session was held to determine his legal status and decide on potential formal charges.
