A driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run during an ambush in the Maipú district has been released after giving a statement to the Carabineros. The incident, which occurred early Tuesday morning on Las Torres Avenue, resulted in the death of a 32-year-old man.

The Western Prosecutor's Office has released the driver under Article 26 of the Criminal Procedure Code. This means the individual is awaiting a further summons from the Public Prosecutor's Office after voluntarily appearing at a police station to provide his testimony.

According to investigators, the driver was the victim of an attempted armed robbery. Criminals traveling in a car and on a motorcycle intercepted him and threatened him with firearms.

Investigation ongoing

Video footage obtained by the press shows the moment the robbery victim approaches the car's trunk. Faced with the imminent threat of the armed suspects, the driver reacted by reversing his vehicle, striking the man who had just stepped out of the car.

Prosecutor Juan Carlos Hidalgo noted that the driver and the deceased may have known each other. Investigations to identify the assailants are being led by the Criminal Investigation Section (SIP) of the Carabineros.

Meanwhile, Lieutenant Colonel Cristián Becerra, of the Santiago Rinconada Prefecture, stated that police efforts are focused on locating the suspects. Authorities are also working to determine if those responsible for the attack are linked to other violent crimes reported in the Maipú area.
