Communication Crisis and Legislative Pressure Threaten José Antonio Kast's Administration

President José Antonio Kast's administration is navigating a week of high political tension, marked by scrutiny of its communication strategy and pressure from the Party of the People (PDG) bloc to secure votes for his national reconstruction project.

The management crisis is unfolding on two fronts: defending the President's public image following protocol errors and negotiating key legislation vital to the economy. According to reports from BioBioChile, the Executive branch is facing widespread criticism from both ruling and opposition parties due to a succession of incidents that have placed La Moneda's senior staff under the spotlight.

Media outlets have highlighted several specific errors, including the use of the term 'bankrupt state,' a perceived lack of political judgment regarding rising fuel prices, and a recent Treasury Ministry memo regarding cuts to social programs. Senator Arturo Squella of the Republican Party has called on ministries and senior administration officials to take charge of communications to reverse the current trend.

The La Moneda Lunch and Kast's Response

One of the primary points of friction involved the President's lunch with former university classmates at the La Moneda Palace. During an event in Rancagua, Kast addressed the episode, characterizing it as a "small mistake."

"I paid for the meal myself, but it is a small mistake, and if I have to answer for it, I will," the President stated, according to CNN Chile. The President used the context of a housing handover ceremony for 120 homes in Rancagua to acknowledge the lapse, though he attempted to downplay its severity.

During the same event, the Head of State shared a lighthearted moment, joking about his residence in the palace. "I have the keys to my little apartment in La Moneda. The rooms are large, but I'm using three of them," he remarked, drawing laughter from the new homeowners of the 'El Sol II and III' projects, according to CNN Chile.

PDG Pressure on the Mega-Reform

In the legislative arena, the outlook is equally challenging. Kast's massive reform project, intended to jumpstart the economy and fund the reconstruction of Valparaíso and Biobío, hinges on the support of the PDG bloc.

Deputy Pamela Jiles warned that her party's support is contingent on the Executive presenting a parallel bill that includes VAT refunds for medicines and diapers. "Our vote will depend on whether the first part of the agreement has been met," Jiles declared on Canal 13'sMesa Centralprogram.

Meanwhile, PDG floor leader Juan Marcelo Valenzuela maintained that the responsibility to fulfill the pact lies with the Executive. "The burden of proof is on the government. We are going to see if the government has the capacity to keep its word, not us," Valette assured, as reported by La Tercera.

The PDG technical team expects the complementary bill to be introduced next week to prevent the mega-reform from being rejected in the Chamber of Deputies.
