President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has confirmed that the new rail service connecting Mexico City to Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) will cost 45 pesos for the full trip. The announcement was made during the morning press conference on April 23, where updates on the railway project were detailed.
According to Jorge Mendoza, Director of Banobras, the total fare for the full journey will be 45 pesos, though tiered pricing of 11.50 and 26.50 pesos will be implemented for shorter segments. According to a statement from the President's Office, these rates will serve as provisional fares during the first month of operation.
Following this initial period, the government will conduct an analysis to establish permanent pricing, with a commitment to ensuring fares remain lower than existing transportation alternatives. The goal is to streamline the user experience through the integration of a unified payment system.
Efforts are underway to make the service compatible with a multimodal card, similar to the Integrated Mobility Card currently used for the Metro, Metrobús, and Mexibús. While the rail system already utilizes smart cards, they currently operate under independent systems.
Nationalization and Change in Ownership
The Federal Government has completed the acquisition of 100% of the system's shares through the National Infrastructure Fund (Fonadin). The buyout was executed with an investment of 5.999 billion pesos.
With this acquisition, the State has eliminated private sector participation from the system. Prior to this change, the Spanish company CAF held a 43.4% stake, alongside the Mexican firm Omnitren.
The expansion of the rail infrastructure will be carried out in three stages. The first phase, which includes the connection to AIFA from Lechería, is scheduled to begin operations on April 26.
The second stage will focus on consolidating the current route from Buenavista to Cuautitlán. Finally, the third phase will extend the service to Pachuca by adding six additional stations.
The infrastructure design will allow passengers to arrive directly beneath the airport terminal, with access to the terminal provided via escalators from the train station.
